Privacy policy
Your greens stay on your phone.
Last updated 20 September 2026
This policy covers the GreenScanner iOS app and the website golfgreenscanner.com. It is written to be read. If anything is unclear, write to support@golfgreenscanner.com.
The app
You need an account
GreenScanner requires you to sign in. Scanning, solving and viewing all happen on your phone, but the app asks you to sign in before you use it, and an account is also what gives saved scans their real course and hole names and the green’s true outline.
If you do sign in, it is with Sign in with Apple. Apple gives us two things: your email address, or the private relay address Apple generates if you choose to hide it, and the identifier Apple assigns to you for this app. We store those, along with a key your phone keeps in its Keychain so it can prove it is you. We never receive or store your Apple password, and there is nothing else in the account.
Every scan is kept on your phone, and signing out does not remove it. Scans are also uploaded to our server and kept with your account, as described under “Where your scans live” below.
Deleting your account
Open the account screen from the person icon on the home screen and choose Delete Account. This deletes your record from our server, revokes our access at Apple, and signs you out. It is immediate and needs no email to us. Your uploaded scans are deleted with it; the copies on your phone are untouched. You can also just sign out, which forgets the key on this phone and leaves the account intact.
Where your scans live
Every scan is stored on your iPhone, in the app’s own documents folder: height maps, thumbnails, quality reports, ball and hole positions and your green-speed setting. That copy is the one the app uses, and it works with no connection at all. Deleting the app deletes it; iCloud device backups include it under Apple’s terms.
Scans are also uploaded to our server and kept with your account, so they are not lost with the phone and so we can improve how the app reads greens. Uploading happens quietly in the background when you have a connection, and never interrupts you: if it fails, the app carries on and tries again later.
How much is uploaded is a setting we control, and there are three positions: nothing at all; the details of the scan without the measured surface (which green, where, when, and how good the scan was); or the full scan including the surface. An uploaded scan carries the location it was made at and the course and hole it belongs to. It contains no photographs — the camera frames the ball and cup detectors use are processed in memory during the scan and discarded, and are never part of what is stored or sent.
Deleting your account deletes your uploaded scans with it. The copies on your phone are untouched, because they were never ours. If you export a scan from the library yourself, that file goes only where you send it, and it carries the surface and quality figures only — no location, no course.
Camera and LiDAR
The camera permission is used for the LiDAR depth stream and for the video frames the ball and cup detectors analyse during a scan. Frames are processed in memory and discarded; no photos or video are stored or sent.
Location
Location while in use is optional, and is read only while the app is open. When granted, it is used for three things: to identify the green and course you are on, so the scan is named after the course; to fetch that green’s outline and draw it around your scan; and to let your uploaded scan be pooled with other golfers’ scans of the same green, which is how the shared slope data everyone benefits from is built. When declined, scans are named by date, no outline is drawn, your scans are not pooled, and everything else works unchanged.
The one thing the app sends: a course lookup
When you save a located scan with a network connection, the app sends the approximate coordinates of the scan to our course database at https://greenscanner.as4.nl to find the nearest green, and may fetch that green’s outline. If you are signed in the request carries your account key, which authenticates it; we do not keep a record of the places you look up, and nothing about the scan itself is sent. We keep ordinary server logs only as long as needed to keep the service reliable and do not build profiles from them. The course data itself is derived from OpenStreetMap.
No analytics, no advertising
The app contains no analytics SDK, no advertising and no third-party trackers.
